Ability is what you're capable of doing.
Motivation determines what you do.
Attitude determines how well you do it.
-Lou Holtz
Objectives and motivating are closely connected. When a person has an objective, he or she most likely acts to achieve it. People are ready to make an effort for the things that are important for them and which they feel are possible to achieve. People are motivated by different things. One wants to experience success, another wants to avoid failing. Some students want to show off in front of the teacher or friends. Often students are interested about the short-term benefits, like passing the driving exam and following freedom to move. Longer-term safety benefits are more distant and less on the mind.
Does learning to drive safely motivate you?
Responsible driver as an objective
The main objective in driving training is to assist the student in becoming a responsible driver. Responsibility is related to safety, sociality, ecologicality and willingness to evaluate one's own actions and their consequences.
Safety
Responsible driver controls the car position, direction and speed, and knows the traffic rules. He is able to drive in different conditions independently and methodically. He also recognizes risks in his own driving, in other road users, in the car and in the driving environment and tries to adapt his own driving according to them. The most important responsibility for a driver is anticipating and avoiding risk situations.
Sociality
Sociality in traffic means, that the driver acts according to safety norms, respects the rights of the other road users, knows how to predict the actions of others and correlatively acts in predictable way and is able to control his own moods. It is especially important to take into account the special groups in traffic; children, elderly and handicapped.
Ecologicality
The driver is also responsible for the environment. He has to be aware of the effects of his own actions, not only in the economy of driving but also in minimising environmental hazards of the car. Equally it is important to be aware of the connection between ecological driving and safety, for example through observing, controlling the speed and anticipating. Ecological responsibility also includes the ability and willingness to consider the alternatives for using a car.
Self-evaluation
Every student has his own unique personality and way to relate to things. It is not an objective in driving training to change the person's personality. But responsible driver relates realistically to his own driving skills and wants to develop as a driver. It can be assumed that a responsible driver is aware and takes into account his own personality, effects of his or her objectives and decisions in traffic, especially when they have effect on safety, other road users or environment. Identifying factors affecting on person's own behaviour and life management and controlling these factors is particularly important.
Study structure and progress
1. Safety training
- Theory lessons 4 hours
2. Study
- Independent studying in Webauto
- Minimum of 10 hours of driving lessons
3. Risk recognition training
- Theory lessons 4 hours
- Driving lessons 4 hours
In driving training, we progress in steps from handling skills to ever more independent driving. In driving training the teacher is the responsible driver of the vehicle. As a student you must make sure that you are in driving condition when attending driving training.
Driving Examination
In the end of the driver's training you will do a driving test, which will show that you master the subjects included in driver's training and are able to apply them as a responsible driver on the road. The examination is divided into theory test and driving test.
The theory test tests your knowledge and readiness to notice risk situations in traffic. Computer-guided theoretical test is a multimedia application; with the application you will perform the test independently on a tablet computer.
For the test you need a learning certificate and trustworthy ID-card with a picture (for example a passport). Test fee and driving permit fee must be paid beforehand. In addition, it is necessary that Trafi (Finnish Transport Safety Agency) has granted you a permit for a driver's license.
You can take the theory test one month before turning 18 years.
The driving test ensures that you can safely continue driving training in traffic. The driving test will be held in circumstances that are very close to independent driving. In driving test the student is the responsible driver.
In the end of driving test the test supervisor will give you an oral feedback about the test. You will be told the final result and made sure that you have a realistic impression about your driving skills. Driving test includes minimum of two handling tasks, from which one is performed in reverse gear.
If you did not pass your driving test, you must retake it. After approved driving test you will immediately receive a diploma that you have passed the driving test. This diploma will, with an ID-card, give you a driving permit for one month. During this time the actual temporary driving license will be made and it is valid for 15 years.
The driving license will be mailed to you.
The Roles and Duties of the Teacher and the Student
It is the teacher's duty to assist the student in reaching the goal of the driver's training: in becoming a responsible driver. The responsibility to learn is on you. This is clear to you as you study independently, prepare for the next driving lessons in advance, and assess your own performance.
Driving licence category B
Vehicles with a gross weight of no more than 3,500 kg that have been designed and manufactured to carry a maximum of eight passengers in addition to the driver. Driving licence B includes the right to drive categories AM/120, AM/121 and T.
Vehicle combinations comprising a towing vehicle in Category B and a towed vehicle whose gross weight is no more than 750 kg.
Vehicle combinations comprising a towing vehicle in Category B and a towed vehicle whose gross weight exceeds 750 kg, as long as the gross weight of the vehicle combination is no more than 3,500 kg.
Road users’ obligations
Road users’ general obligations
To prevent dangerous situations and losses, road users must follow traffic regulations and exercise the care and caution required by the conditions. Traffic may not be prevented or obstructed unnecessarily. A vehicle may not be driven unnecessarily slowly, nor may you apply the brakes suddenly without good reason.
Road users’ obligation to predict situations
Road users must predict other road users’ actions in order to prevent dangerous situations and damage, and adjust their own actions accordingly to contribute to smooth and safe traffic.
