13.4 Actions when overtaking and being overtaken
Responsibilities when overtaking and being overtaken
The driver of the overtaking vehicle has to ensure sufficient distance to the vehicle being overtaken.
The main responsibility is always on the driver of the overtaking vehicle.
The vehicle being overtaken, after noticing the overtake attempt, has to keep as far to the right hand side edge of the road as possible, taking into account the traffic and other circumstances. The vehicle being overtaken must also not increase its speed.
A slow-moving vehicle has to decrease the speed and if possible give way to make overtaking easier on narrow or curvy roads or if the oncoming traffic is heavy. In doing so, the slow vehicle may temporarily drive on the road verge.
Actions When Being Overtaken
The vehicle being overtaken, after noticing the overtake attempt, has to keep as far on the right-hand side edge of the road as possible taken into account the traffic and other circumstances. The vehicle being overtaken must also not increase the speed.
Actions When Overtaking
Ensure that you have enough space. Check from the rear-view mirror that a vehicle travelling behind you has not begun to overtake you.
Choose a gear that lets you accelerate promptly. Give a light signal to the vehicle in front of you and turn on the left indicator.
Check the side mirror and blind spot.
Look far ahead, start to accelerate and move to the overtaking lane. (At this point you can still abort the overtake maneuver).
When you can see the vehicle being overtaken in the rear-view mirror, turn on the right indicator.
Check the side mirror and blind spot.
Look far ahead and steer gently back to your own traffic lane.
