You drive like you live.

When you sit on the driver's seat you bring your persona, character, temperament and feelings with you. Personality dimensions include the following; extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism and openness. Nearly all five basic dimensions have been found to have genetic ground.

Driving task goals and self-control are usually on the background of every serious crash. Traffic accidents are mainly caused by human mistakes. In the studies of human behaviour in cash queue and in traffic, the similarities are evident: if a person is nervous in the cash queue the person acts the same in traffic. Lack of experience and excessive risk taking often leads to too high situational speed, which is a common cause for the accidents by youth.

Special risks of young drivers

Every third person injured in traffic is a youth.

In the last five years average of 74 youth died and 2900 were injured yearly. Close to 80 % of the fatalities were men. Three out of four died in passenger car.

Young drivers have high accident risk – until they gain driving experience.

The risk for dying in traffic is over three times the average with young drivers. Over half (55%) of fatalities happened between Friday and Sunday.

Run-off-road collisions are typical – one out of three drunken drivers is a youth.

It is typical for a young person to overestimate their driving skills and to take higher risks. This leads to run-off-road collisions, in which close to half of the victims die. In head-on collisions one fourth of the victims die.
