5.1 Characteristics of different road user groups

Bicycle and pedestrian transport

kevyestä liikenteestä varoittavia liikennemerkkejä

When encountering a pedestrian, bicycle or a moped the driver of a vehicle has to give them adequate space on the road according to their size and speed.

The driver has to be especially cautious when approaching stationary school bus, bus or tram, as well as children, elderly, handicapped or others that have evident problems in surviving safely in the traffic.

White cane acts as a mark for others that the person is blind or visually impaired.

Mopeds

Because usually moped riders don't have much traffic riding experience it is advisable to be cautious when encountering them. Because the mopeds ride close to the right-hand side edge of the road, they are hard to notice. Moped cars drive on the middle of the road like normal cars. The highest permitted speed for both is 45 km/h. Moped cars have a red slow-moving vehicle triangle on the rear.

Motorcycles

Motorcycles usually ride in the middle of the traffic lane. The position of a motorcycle varies according to road surface and form; this means that a motorcycle needs the same amount of space as a car. Maintain adequate distance to a motorcycle, because it may have to do an emergency stop for example because of a small animal.

Heavy vehicles

raskaan ajoneuvon merkki

Because of their high mass trucks, buses and semi-trailers accelerate and stop slowly. When joining or exiting a road observe the traffic behind and take into account the problems of heavy vehicles. The speed limit for heavy vehicles is 80 km/h. In certain cases, buses can drive 100 km/h.

Special cases

poliisiauton siniset valot

Regardless of traffic control you have to give free passage for an emergency vehicle giving sound and blue light signals and for a convoy led by a police vehicle giving verbal signals. Road users must not interrupt the progress of a military unit, a convoy, a supervised group of children or other organized procession.

keltainen varoitusvalo

Vehicle used in road maintenance or in similar work done on the road or next to it, is marked with a yellow warning light. A driver of such a vehicle is allowed to disregard traffic control other than right-of-way, speed limit or red traffic light if the circumstances so demand. Vehicles at road works can be passed in an appropriate manner taking into account the particular circumstances involved.

Slow moving vehicle sign

hitaan ajoneuvon kilpi

When three-wheel moped, light four-wheeler, tractor or powered work machine is driven on a road; it has to have a slow-moving vehicle sign. The speed limit for a slow-moving vehicle is 50 km/h.
