12.0 Driving on the Motorway

kuva autosta maantiellä

Motorways have less traffic than urban areas and for this reason the speeds are also higher. When the speed accelerates quickly our senses cannot keep up and we experience motion induced blindness (MIB).

The most common cause for serious accidents is too high situational speed. There would not be many serious accidents, if everybody would drive correct situational speed.

As Speeds Increase:

Observing and estimating traffic situations becomes harder. Usually we underestimate speeds and overestimate distances. Stopping distances increase. Drivers experience level or car handling skills have very little affect to these things. The need for overtaking and the probability for mistakes increase. The risk for Run-off-road collisions and steering to opposite traffic lane increases.
