12.2 Driving on the main road
Outside of urban areas the general speed limit is 80 km/h, unless a road sign indicates otherwise. When driving 80 km/h the vehicle moves 22 meters per second.
Priority road. The intersecting roads have to give way.
End of priority.
Intersection with minor road. Be cautious even though the traffic on intersecting road has to give way.
Bend. Adjust your speed before the bend.
Elks. Midsummer and autumn are the most dangerous times. These animals are on the move especially around dawn and dusk and that is when most of the accidents occur:
after the sign reduce your speed, so you can stop quickly
use high-beam as much as possible
observe also the sides of the road, especially in places where there are trees and bushes near the road
if you notice something abnormal, brake immediately
slip behind the animal
Slippery road. Observe the surface of the road and reduce your speed if the road is slippery.
The sign states "WIDE TRANSPORT"
When encountering a special transport vehicle reduce your speed if necessary and move to the right edge of the road.
Driving On a Gravel Road
A gravel road has significantly less traction than an asphalt road. Especially loose gravel can cause the driver to lose the control of the vehicle. When two vehicles pass at high speed the stones skipping can damage the vehicles.
When the ground frost melts in the spring it causes so called "weather break" (fin. kelirikko). At this time, it is advisable to avoid the road edges, because they can cave in and cause an accident. Decrease your speed adequately.
