Entering the motorway

A vehicle may enter a motorway or expressway only where the road begins or from a slip-road.

Accelerate to the speed used on the motorway (80-120 km/h). Observe the traffic and choose a gap you will use for joining the traffic. Take into account the give way rules.

Put on the indicator, check the side mirror and blind spot.

Look far ahead and change lanes before you reach the end of the acceleration lane.

Motorway driving

On a motorway, you must drive in the free lane which is furthest to the right. If informative road signs show that the traffic lanes lead in certain directions, you may, nevertheless, use the lane appropriate to the circumstances and most suitable for the continuation of your journey.

If there are three lanes or more in the same direction, a truck or a vehicle combination exceeding seven meters in length may only be driven in one of the first two on right-hand side lanes.

A vehicle travelling in front must be overtaken on the left. Overtaking on the right without changing lanes is, however, permitted in cases where vehicles are in a queue or using pre-selected lanes in accordance with informative road signs, or if the overtaking vehicle is being driven on a bus lane.

Look far ahead and keep the distance to the vehicle in front of you at minimum of 3-4 seconds.

Exiting the motorway

A motorway or expressway may be exited with a vehicle only where the road ends or by using an exit indicated by road signs in the direction of driving.

Monitor the traffic signs.

Check the rear-view mirror, put on the indicator and continue with the same speed.

Maintain the speed, move to slowdown lane, check the rear-view mirror and start braking.
