5.3 Predictable driving
Anticipation
An experienced driver is able to read the traffic. Many dangerous situations can be avoided by good route planning. Before starting to drive it is advisable to check that there are no objects etc. around the car. At the same time, it is good to make sure that the vehicle is in driving order. By choosing the safest route and traffic lane well ahead, we get to the destination safely. Anticipating that happens during the trip requires effective observing. By looking far ahead we are able to maintain the correct driving line and we have time to react to problems.
Predictability
It is essential that other road users interpret our intentions correctly. We can make our actions easier for others to anticipate by using driving speed that is well suited to the situation and by signaling timely. Correct driving lines and driving turns are the most important parts of intersection driving. We can obtain more time to react and act by keeping sufficient distance to other road users.
